One of the blogs I follow has recently been posting these 30 Days of Truth writing prompts. (See list here: http://hope.gr/30-days-of-truth/ ) I thought, what a great idea!

A band or artist that has gotten you thru (Letter)

I guess if you know me, you know EXACTLY who Ill be writing this to!

Dear Robert Smith (from The Cure [in case you were wondering])

I want to thank you for writing the songs that youve written. Your music and lyrics are always on my mind.

No matter what type of day Im having, I can listen to one of  your albums and be instantly taken away. Your lyrics are so embedded in my brain, that I can always sing a song just based on conversation.

I can clearly remember walking into the record store with my dad when I was about 8 years old. I saw this crazy album (photo below) and thought, thats an interesting cover – I asked my dad to buy it for me. (and oddly enough he did).

I listened to this album non-stop. My parents really were tired of it….and then we were in the record store again and I asked if there were any new “Cure” albums. I was led into what would be my favorite section of the record store, The Imports 🙂

My next purchase (with my very own money this time) would be one of my favorite Cure albums, even to this day…Seventeen Seconds.

Then….when I was about 11, The Cure totally changed me. This album literally called out to me.

This album is my favorite. Dont let the title fool you tho. I can honestly say that THIS album completely changed my life. I became full-on-devoted-Cure-a-holic. FULL ON.

The rest is history.

I have purchased EVERY Cure album since….and even got the remasters with the B-Sides…..Ive been to see them in concert many times, even getting a chance for a brief meeting with Robert and Simon which is my claim to fame. (Even tho meeting East Bay Ray from the Dead Kennedys was awesome too!)

But….not a day goes by that I dont play at least one song from The Cure. NOT A DAY.

The Cure and Robert Smith have shaped who I am, and have gotten me thru almost 40 years. Their discography is nothing short of amazing.

Even my bf who at one time said he wouldnt even listen to em, actually enjoys a good bit of that theyve put out and has been to at least 3 Cure concerts.

I woke up with this song in my head. I know theres a reason for everything. (Sorry for the ‘cheat’ of a post – but my mind and heart feel a little down today)

The world is neither fair nor unfair
The idea is just a way for us to understand
But the world is neither fair nor unfair
So one survives
The others die
And you always want a reason why

But the world is neither just nor unjust
It’s just us trying to feel that there’s some sense in it
No, the world is neither just nor unjust
And though going young
So much undone
Is a tragedy for everyone

It doesn’t speak a plan or any secret thing
No unseen sign or untold truth in anything…
But living on in others, in memories and dreams
Is not enough
You want everything
Another world where the sun always shines
And the birds always sing
Always sing…

The world is neither fair nor unfair
The idea is just a way for us to understand
No the world is neither fair nor unfair
So some survive
And others die
And you always want a reason why

But the world is neither just nor unjust
It’s just us trying to feel that there’s some sense in it
No, the world is neither just nor unjust
And though going young
So much undone
Is a tragedy for everyone

It doesn’t mean there has to be a way of things
No special sense that hidden hands are pulling strings
But living on in others, in memories and dreams
Is not enough
And it never is
You always want so much more than this…

An endless sense of soul and an eternity of love
A sweet mother down below and a just father above
For living on in others, in memories and dreams
Is not enough
You want everything
Another world
Where the birds always sing
Another world
Where the sun always shines
Another world
Where nothing ever dies…

Im taking a time out from reality to review The Cure’s latest cd, 4:13 Dream.

I love this cd. Since purchasing it Thursday after work, I have listened to it pretty much non-stop. As I write this, its actually playing on my media player.

For those of you curious, I have included a few videos.

Underneath The Stars
A beautiful song. I have always loved long introductions when it comes to The Cure. It is such a “dreamy” song and the music itself is “lyrical”. I cant help but sway along.

The Only One
Snappy and catchy song…reminds me of “The End of the World”

The Reasons Why
Great hook! I love how the lyrics are “put together” Another “dreamy” song.

Freakshow
One of my favorite songs on this cd. This song makes me dance around! Guitars!

This, here and Now, With You
The first time I heard this song, I really didnt like it. It definately grew on me. Frank still doesnt like it. The best and rhythm of the lyrics are fantastic.

Sleep When Im DeadI initially bought this cd because of this song. I love the guitar!

The ScreamThis song is fantastic. After Freakshow, this is next. The build up is awesome!
Again, guitar!

Its over
Other than the fact that you get thru the entire cd to this point without any cursing, the f-word is dropped twice.

I have decided that the perfect Cure concert would include the following songs:

The Kiss
Figurehead
The Promise
Lost
Scream
Never Enough
Sinking
More than This
Like Cockatoos
Jupiter Crash
End

and of course, Letter to Elise

I decided since I don’t feel well to do a personal blog about my favorite band-The Cure. Ever since I was 8, I have loved Cure songs. No matter what kind of day I’ve had, I can listen to The Cure and feel better.

Many of you only know the band as those with crazy hair and make-up, but once upon a time, Robert had a crewcut. And not that I am nitpicking my favorite band or anything, but they made the right choice not to have synth-
