Earlier this week I addressed the Komen fiasco (https://sheilafaulstich.wordpress.com/2012/02/01/has-susan-g-komen-lost-sight-of-the-cause/). Due to the activism of MANY MANY people, Komen caved to the pressure, and reinstated the grant to Planned Parenthood. But, in all actuality, they really didnt.

Yesterday the internet blew up posting how Komen restored the funding to Planned Parenthood: (http://www.mediaite.com/online/susan-g-komen-apologizes-restores-planned-parenthood-funding/)

If you read the statement made by Nancy Brinker, you will notice that this ‘apology’ is half-hearted. Not only that, but its pretty condescending to those who support Planned Parenthoods mission of helping the lower income population in our country.

It laughable that Komen will re-write their funding criteria ONCE AGAIN…..and more than likely written to exclude organizations like Planned Parenthood, which provide services that are politically and/or religiously objectionable.

Their excuse of excluding organizations that are under investigation has now turned to mention the word ‘criminal’. This addition would lead many to believe that their current funding of Penn State would be discontinued, but so far, that grant is still occurring. (http://motherjones.com/mojo/2012/02/komen-foundation-gave-75-million-grant-penn-state). Penn State is currently under Federal Investigation for the horrible child sex abuse scandal. I guess time will tell if Komen will put their money where their grant criteria is.

However, it is somewhat disturbing that Komen has also stopped funding stem cell research at Johns Hopkins, as well as to other research-type institutions (http://www.care2.com/causes/susan-g-komen-foundation-also-stops-funding-embryonic-stem-cell-research.html). As far as I can tell, none of those facilites are under ANY type of investigations. Seems to me that Komen has gone away from their mission of research and into the realm of partisan politics.

And while many people I know are against stem cell research of ANY kind due to religious convictions, isnt part of what Komen does, research? The partisanship of what ‘type’ of research shouldnt be a key factor unless they change their non-profit status.

And it is policy changes such as this that proves that Handel is making Komen her personal platform instead of the organization that so many have supported. Yes, EVERYONE would like to find a cure for cancer, all cancers. But to make the Komen Foundation into your own soapbox……disgusts me.

Prior to Komen announcing their ‘reversal’ they had claimed that donations were up 100%. So why the sudden change of heart? Late yesterday afternoon, I personally received two emails from Komen asking for my support (meaning money). Ive since unsubscribed from the MD Affiliate.

Even if I didnt know of the benefits of organizations like Planned Parenthood first hand, I would have to say that Komens lack of ability to pick a side angers me. Either support womens health and research, or dont. Its that simple.
