God was behind Big Bang, pope says: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/40945242/ns/technology_and_science-science/from/toolbar

So, I clicked on the above linked article, expecting an article all about how the Pope learned about the Big Bang theory and instead had my mind blown when I found out that my church has changed the way they think about the Book of Genesis.

See this line near the end:  The Catholic Church no longer teaches creationism — the belief that God created the world in six days as described in the Bible — and says that the account in the book of Genesis is an allegory for the way God created the world.

Now, I converted to Catholicism in 1993 and my bf converted in 2007 and neither of us was told about this change in policy. This leads me to wonder who exactly is being taught that Genesis is an allegory.

Most religious people I know distrust the theory of evolution because of what we are taught regarding the story of creation that is in Genesis. So what gives?

When will church going people learn what their selected denominations actually stand for?

And how would you go about re-educating all all the Catholics who were taught that Genesis was how we came to be?
